What is Buprenorphine?
Buprenorphine is an opioid medication; however, this opioid is NOT used as a pain reliever. Rather, is used to treat opioid addiction in certain individuals who have already been treated with other forms of this medicine (such as Subutex or Suboxone). Buprenorphine is given to teens and adults aged 16 and older as an implant that is placed under the skin. This medication helps prevent withdrawal symptoms when stopping other opioids.
Buprenorphine implants are available only from a certified pharmacy under a special program. You must be registered in the program and understand the risks and benefits of using this medicine. [drugs.com]
