Through perseverance, hard work, counseling, social support, and rediscovering self-worth and love, you have overcome addiction. But, recovery doesn’t end after your substance use disorder has. Recovery and addiction management is an ongoing process.

4 Tips for Ongoing Substance Use Disorder Management and Recovery Support
- Change starts from within. Starting over requires change in your behavior and lifestyle. Learn new coping strategies for stress; surround yourself with people who are inspiring and do not use drugs or alcohol; and continue exploring self-love and ways to build your self-esteem so you feel good about yourself.
- Find ongoing support. Continue counseling either individually or in a group setting. Join a support group for recovering drug or alcohol users. 12-steps programs offer ongoing peer support by individuals who have “been in your shoes” and understand what you’ve been through, and where you’re heading.
- Control triggers. Even in recovery managing cravings and triggers for substance use is vital to abstinence. Avoid people who use the substances you’re recovering from as well as situations where you will be around drugs and/or alcohol. Talk to your doctors about your past drug use and be cautious about taking prescribed opioid painkillers.
- Rediscover what makes you happy. During a substance use disorder, the only thing that makes a person happy is using more of a particular drug. Now in recovery, rediscover the activities that once brought you joy. Rebuild your life. Create goals and plans for the future. Get involved in your community and reconnect with loved ones and friends who can help you on your journey of recovery.
